Suellen, a Brazilian toll booth attendant and mother, falls in with a gang of thieves in an attempt to keep her family afloat. In doing so, she realizes she can use her job to raise some extra money illegally for a so-called noble cause: to send her son to an expensive gay conversion workshop led by a renowned foreign priest.
About Director
Carolina Markowicz is a Brazilian director and screenwriter based in São Paulo. Her early career is defined by a number of award-winning short films, including Tatuapé Mahal Tower which was awarded Best Short Film over 15 times. She was invited to join the Toronto International Film Festival Talent Lab, where she worked with mentors including Wim Wenders. Her short film O Órtão won the 2018 Queer Palm award at Cannes. Her first feature Charcoal (2022) had its world premiere at Platform Competition at Toronto International Film Festival and has received more than 10 awards worldwide. Toll is her second feature-length film.
