In her early twenties, Hiam Abbas left her native Palestinian village to follow her dream of becoming an actress in Europe, leaving behind her mother, grandmother, and seven sisters. Thirty years later, her filmmaker daughter Line returns with her to the village and questions for the first time her mother’s bold choices, her chosen exile, and the way the women in their family influenced both their lives. Set between past and present Bye Bye Tiberias pieces together images of today, family footage from the nineties, and historical archives to portray four generations of darling Palestinian women who keep their story and legacy alive through the strength of their bonds, despite exile, dispossession, and heartbreak.
About Director
Polish film director and scriptwriter Holland was born in Warsaw in 1948. After graduating from FAMU in Prague in 1971, she began her film career as assistant director of Krzysztof Zanussi and was mentored by Andrzej Wajda. Throughout her career, the filmmaker was nominated for the Academy Award 3 times for Angry Harvest (1985), Europa Europa (1990) and In Darkness (2012). Holland’s numerous features include Oliver, Oliver (1992), The Secret Garden (1993), Total Eclipse (1995), Julie Walking Home (2001), Spoor (2017), Mr. Jones (2019) and Charlatan (2020) among others. She also directed episodes for many notable tv series, including Treme and House of Cards.
